Computer Recommendations:
Keep your computer operating system up to date, I recommend having Automatic Updates on all the time.  Microsoft usually issues major updates on Tuesdays so leaving your computer on all night on Tuesdays will let it update during the night while you’re not using it.
First and foremost I recommend backing up your computer on some sort of external drive.  Sooner or later the hard drive will probably fail losing all your data, pictures, documents, etc.
Be very careful installing programs, watch out for free stuff that is included, usually it is just junk software that clogs up the computer.

Best Free Anti Virus I use now is Microsoft Security Essentials available from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security_essentials/default.aspx

Keep your Anti Virus up to date always.  Never turn it off for any reason.  Know which Anti Virus you have on your computer so if a warning pops up saying you have an infection or problems you will know if it is really yours or just some sort of malware trying to get into your computer.

CCleaner is available from http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard

Run CCleaner occasionally to get rid of junk files, cookies, etc.  Usually best to restart the computer after cleaning.  Start CCleaner and then click on “Run Cleaner”.  This will clear your entire browser History and Passwords for the Internet so if you are used to just going to a website and already being logged on (like online email or facebook, etc.) you will have to log on the next time you go there.  I don’t advise using any other aspects of the program because it is very powerful and can make changes to your computer that can make it unusable.

Malwarebytes is available from http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free

Run Malwarebytes anytime the computer seems weird or slow.  When you first start the program go to the “Update” tab and click on “Check for Updates”.  Once it has updated go back to the “Scanner” tab select “Perform full scan” and then click on the “Scan” button.  This will take a little while so best to do it when you are not using the computer for something.  Whatever it finds you want to remove and then restart the computer.
If you have a question call me right then on my cell phone 314-303-2819 and I can probably walk you through it quickly.  If you wait and are not at the computer it is a lot more difficult to figure out what you were doing and what the problem is.  If any error boxes pop up try to copy down the exact wording and error code number.
